Happy Birthday, Buzz

On July 20, 1969, two men took part in the first official moonwalk. Messrs Armstrong and Aldrin chose to walk around Greenwich under full--

Only joking.

Of course, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin actually walked on the moon. None of this sliding backwards and grabbing your groin business. No circuits of London or Edinburgh in a bra - which I'll be doing with two male friends in June, I must add. No sneaking about under full-moon through backstreets, or crossing crags and moors. These men (along with Michael Collins) flew a light-second to our lunar cousin, landed the Eagle, and then kicked about in the dust. They did other fascinating stuff - mentioned in my book - but we remember them leaping like kids with trampoline-trainers around the lunar module.

Well today it's Buzz Aldrin's birthday. He's 79.

Here are a few things you probably didn't know about the second man on the moon:
  • Buzz's mum's maiden name was Marion Moon
  • His dad, Edwin Eugene Aldrin, was an aviation pioneer
  • Buzz shot down two MIGs in the Korean War
  • He's got 290 hours of experience in space
  • He has his own rocket design company, Starcraft Boosters Inc
  • Buzz has written two novels, The Return and Encounter with Tiber
  • Mr Second-man-to-walk-on-the-moon now finds Earth travel more appealing than space travel, or at least gets more invovled in it (he is 79 after all!)
Marion Moon. That's great. It's funny because my mum's maiden name was Travel-Writer.
